Start with essential services

Schedule utility changes around your actual move date and confirm final bills. Arrange internet installation early if the new home requires an appointment.

  • Electricity, gas and water
  • Internet and other communications
  • Trash or recycling service
  • Home security or access services

Update important records

Change your address with financial institutions, insurance providers, employers, schools and other organizations that regularly mail important documents. Check each organization's preferred update method rather than assuming one change updates every account.

Handle mail and deliveries

Use the U.S. Postal Service's official change-of-address process and update shopping, subscription and delivery accounts separately. Watch for packages that may still be traveling to the old address.

Keep a confirmation list

Maintain a simple checklist of organizations updated, date completed and confirmation number when available. Review the list again a few weeks after the move for anything you missed.

General consumer guidance should be checked against current official requirements. For interstate household-goods moves, FMCSA is a useful starting point for federal information. State-specific requirements should be verified with the appropriate state authority.
